Coconut Shell Spinning Top, Kupien Village, New Guinea – 18-14

Coconut shell tops are quite an interesting New Guinea artifact. First of all they seem to have been independently invented in to different places, one among the Abelam people as well as by some groups along the Sepik. They hold a ceremonial place during the yam cycle and can only be spun by initiated men, supposedly to determine how well their giant yams will grow. Other times of year they become children’s toys.

Priced at $50,  plus $10 for shipping. Total cost $60.
