Kina Shell Necklace, Highlands, Papua New Guinea

Kina Shell Necklace, Highlands, Papua New Guinea. Shell money in New Guinea consisted of these large gold-lip mother of pearl shells known as Kina, which were the major unit of currency, and smaller cut clam shells known as toea.  Shell money was used as part of traditional bride prices and to settle grievances. The money of independent Papua New Guinea is called Kina and Toea. Kina shells and other shell money still have value and are used in New Guinea.
