Old Bilum Hook with Heavy Patina, Middle Sepik River. 7591 SOLD

Old Bilum Hook with Heavy Patina, Middle Sepik River. Hooks are used along the Sepik on which to hang bilum bags to keep them off the floor. There are no tables or counters or even chairs in the houses. In the men’s house the bilums contain ceremonial items. In personal homes the bilums hold personal items, food, clothing, etc. Oddly, old used hooks are not super common. This one shows a lot of age and has a thick dark patina from years of hanging in a house. I won’t say it is stone carved but a lot of the carving does appear to either be sold and worn that it looks like it was carved with other than metal tools. It is 15.5 inches high.
