Sago Peg, Abelam People, New Guinea – 18-21

Sago Peg, Abelam People, New Guinea. A very nice old Abelam carving. Sago pegs are used to hold woven basketry sheets to a framework used in the making of the diet staple, sago flour. This old peg still has a lot of great bright color and really nice imagery, especially the hornbill on the top. You can see it has cracks which would have developed by being wet a lot in the process of making sago. The cracks are old and the piece is very solid. As you can see, it has an old collection number on the back. It is 22.5 inches tall and comes with a custom mount.
