Very Old Wooden Yam Ceremony Mask, Abelam People, Papua New Guinea, 7016

Very Old Wooden Yam Ceremony Mask, Abelam People, Papua New Guinea. These masks are ancestral spirit images used to decorate, consecrate, and celebrate the ancestors at the yam harvest festival.  They are attached, along with other decorations, to the large yams grown by the men. This old piece was collected in Mikau Village in the early 1970’s. It shows a lot of age and layers of paint indicating repeated use in the annual ceremonies. It is 13 inches tall and 5.5 inches wide.
