Huge Dance Costume Mask, Lower Ramu/Sepik River - Sold

Huge Dance Costume Mask - This is a classic design with the usual red, black and white colors. It shows age and use but, I admit, I have never seen one this large. Since they are built iunto a large framework dance costume the size is not necessarily relevant. It does have the small holes around the perimeter for attachment to the costume. It is very finely and thinly carved so is rather light for its size, 32.25 inches tall and 12.5 inches wide. Detail work is excellent, notice the tiny mask on the forehead. It sells for SOLD Shipping within the US is free. Contact me for shipping outside the US. Inquire or order: #9069

It has been repainted many times, the last time with a pinkish color but underneath is a more traditional yellow. It looks like the owner added some red chalk lines the last time he repainted it. It is a big crude but still keeps that classic maira form. Circa 1950. 24.5 inches tall, mounted. Sells for SOLD Shipping within the US is free. Contact me for shipping outside the US. It is carefully and finely carved in such a delicate manner, the artist obviously had considerable talent to make such a wonderful piece using the tools of the time, most likely, stone and animal teeth. It has tiny now headless figure at the top. I love this piece. Early 20th century. 8.5 inches tall and comes with a stand. Priced at $125 Shipping within the US is free.
Yam Ceremony Mask

Yam Ceremony Mask - Yam Masks or "Babamini", are made in the Wosera and Maprik areas of Papua New Guinea. These masks are ancestral spirit images used to decorate, consecrate, and celebrate the ancestors at the yam harvest festival. Ceremonial yams grow up to 12 feet long and a man's status is judged by his ability to grow big yams. During the festival, the yams are decorated with masks, flowers, fruit, and leaves until they resemble men at the last stage of initiation and are then displayed. These yam 'men' are believed to be present as living beings capable of hearing and seeing. A man does not keep his yams but exchanges them with his traditional exchange partner. The partner with the biggest yams is seen to have the most power. Men make the basketry masks they put on the yams and paint them with clay pigments and natural paints. The masks are carefully stored each year after the yam ceremonies the repainted and reused the next year. This old mask was collected in the early 1970rsquo;s and shows considerable age and evidence being repainted for many yam ceremonies. It is 8.5 inches tall.
Very Old Bilum Bag, Papua New Guinea

Very Old Bilum Bag, Papua New Guinea - This is one of the oldest bilums I have ever had. It shows considerable age and use but is still in superb shape. It is woven from a thick and heavy bush twine, which is probably why it survived so long in the field. It is of a Highlands type that did not have a one-piece strap. The strap was woven in two havles as a continuation of the bag itself. Some bags have a one-piece woven strap that is made separately and then woven into the bag. To use it was knotted and whatever length was needed at the time by the owner. This bag has one very special feature, the bilas on the ends of the straps are bone. I have no idea what kind of bone it is but it is very old tiny pieces of bone still covered mostly in dried skin. As near as I can tell they are mammalian bones but from what or what part of the animal, I have no clue. It measures 15 inches wide as laid out in the photo and 10 inches high, not counting the straps. Priced at $145 Shipping within the US is free. Contact me for shipping outside the US.
Antique Crocodile Canoe Prow, Papua New Guinea

Antique Crocodile Canoe Prow - Canoes are the primary mode of travel for villagers on the Sepik as few roads or even trails run very far. Once a canoe has reached the point where it can no longer be repaired, or, if the owner dies it is cut up for firewood or left to rot on the ground or in the water. The most common form for a prow to take on the middle Sepik is of a crocodile. Crocodiles not only figure prominently in tribal creation mythology but also are a very real and dangerous threat to anyone in a small boat on the river. It is said that the croc prow is designed to fool a crocodile into thinking it has encountered another croc and not a nice bowl filled with tasty morsels. Personally, I believe the people are far to intelligent, especially about the natural world, to believe this. This large, heavy prow is from a manrsquo;s canoe, and is very old. As you can see, the carving and design is striking. There is a bit of a metal repair on the underside, indicating it served its owner for many years. There is an ancestor face on the crocrsquo;s snout. The prow is 31.5 inches long.
Hook Figure, upper Sepik River, New Guinea

Hook Figure - Hooks are used along the Sepik for both secular and ceremonial purposes. In the home, bilum bags filled with food and possessions are hung from hooks to keep them off the floor, out of the way, and away from children, dogs and vermin. They are used in the Men's house on which to hang valuables and ritual items and, in the not so distant past, to hang the skulls of vanquished enemies. They are still a very commonly used item all along the Sepik as the houses have not really changed all that much since the Stone Age. Figures and masks on the hooks represent ancestors and clan totemic animals. This superb, very old hook was collected by Ron Perry in the hills above Ambunti in the fall of 1976. It dates to the early 1960rsquo;s or well before.
Wanleg Cult Hook, Karawari River, New Guinea

Wanleg Cult Hook, Karawari River, middle Sepik River area. Cult Hooks or "Wanlegs", are found in villages of the Karawari River and the Blackwater River. Karawari cult hooks are one of the most famous and sought after of all New Guinea artifacts. They were made famous when a cache of ancient carvings was discovered in caves along the Karawari where they were kept and used for ceremonies for generations. On the Karawari they are called Aripa and are considered to be living beings that help initiated men in hunting and warfare. They are given offerings of blood and betel nut juice prior to a hunt or battle. Should the Aripa fail to help find prey or vanquish an enemy, it would be discarded and replaced with a new one. Small ones are known as "yipwon" and are carried as amulets, larger ones are kept in the men's house. This aesthetically beautiful wanleg has a dark patina and shows considerable age. Collected in the 1960rsquo;s. It is 38.25 inches tall and custom mounted.
Sepik Coastal Canoe Prow

Sepik Coastal Canoe Prow. Canoes are the primary mode of travel for villagers on the Sepik, as few roads or even trails run very far. Once a canoe has reached the point where it can no longer be repaired, or if the owner dies, it is cut up for firewood, simply shoved into the fire like a yule log, or left to rot on the ground or in the water. We ask them to remove the prows before they do that and save them for us. This very old prow is classic for the area with an ancestor face whose long nose is a bird. There is also another bird at the end of the prow. It has a small bit of cloth stuffed in a hole, I imagine, to slow a leak. It is circa 1960 and measures 21.25inches long. Custom mounted. Sells for $160 Shipping within the US is free.

Helmet Mask, Abelam people, Wosera area. Helmet masks, called babakumbu, are made of woven rattan and painted in bright colors. They are made by the men of the Abelam tribe as ancestral religious power centers and are used for healing, power, initiation, and harvest festivals. Large skirts of split sago palm leaves are attached to the bottom part of the mask to form a striking costume. Colorful feathers, leaves, and a necklace of bright red and green inedible fruit complete the costume. The Babakumbu dancer keeps women, children, and the uninitiated away from important ceremonial areas. At initiation ceremonies these same dancers confront the initiates and guests in a threatening and violent manner. Eventually the initiates´ chase the spirits back into the forest. This is one of the most unique babas I have ever seen. It has that large headdress at the top with a small woven bird stuck through an opening at the very top. Painted with several layers of paint. It must have been quite imposing when attached to the costume. It sells for $1500 Shipping within the US is free. Contact me for shipping outside the US. Inquire or order: #7912

Sepik River Crocodile Canoe Prow

Sepik River Crocodile Canoe Prow. Canoes are the primary mode of travel for villagers on the Sepik as few roads or even trails run very far. Once a canoe has reached the point where it can no longer be repaired, or if the owner dies, it is cut up for firewood, simply shoved into the fire like a yule log, or left to rot on the ground or in the water. We ask them to remove the prows before they do that and save them for us. Personally, I believe the people are far too intelligent, especially about the natural world, to believe this. This great old used prow measures 28 inches long and 9 inches wide at the wide end. Lots of great detail on the head and well as on the sides of the canoe part. Custom mounted. They are given offerings of blood and betel nut juice prior to a hunt or battle. Should the Aripa fail to help find prey or vanquish an enemy, it would be discarded and replaced with a new one. Small ones are known as "yipwon" and are carried as amulets, larger ones are kept in the men´s house. Blackwater wanglegs are slightly different in appearance, tend to be painted and more decorated. Karawari wanlegs are generally unpainted. This old cult hook is custom mounted and measures 21.75 inches tall.
Basketry Yam Mask, Abelam people, Wosera

Basketry Yam Mask - Yam Masks or "Babamini", are made in the Wosera and Maprik areas of Papua New Guinea. These masks are ancestral spirit images used to decorate, consecrate, and celebrate the ancestors at the yam harvest festival. Ceremonial yams grow up to 12 feet long and a man´s status is judged by his ability to grow big yams. During the festival, the yams are decorated with masks, flowers, fruit, and leaves until they resemble men at the last stage of initiation and are then displayed. These yam ´men´ are believed to be present as living beings capable of hearing and seeing. These wonderful, expressive masks are some of the only truly genuine, traditional, ceremonial masks still to be found in New Guinea. This area has, more than many parts of New Guinea, maintained its traditional culture to a great degree because of its relative remoteness and the very real dangers of entering the area. This tightly woven yam mask is very old with a beautiful dark patina. There is a lot of paint remaining and shows evidence of having been repainted a number of times. There is a bit of rodent damage on the inside that does not affect the integrity of the piece nor is it noticeable on the front. It was exhibited at Augustana College in the show: The Ethereal World of the Spirits: Tribal Art of New Guinea from the Collection of Joe Maierhauser. It measures 12 inches tall by 9 inches wide.

Ancestor Mask, Kambaramba Village, lower Sepik River, Papua New Guinea. Most masks in New Guinea are not worn over the face but are hung in or outside ceremonial menrsquo;s houses or attached to large dance costumes. They can depict sprits or family, clan, tribal ancestors Here is a fine old mask from Kambaramba that was collected in situ in September of 1976. It was old when collected so dates from a much earlier time. It appears to have been a Savi mask but the tongue broke off many years before and looks to have been repaired but then the tongue was lost. It has a lot of remnants of paint, white and a pinkish-red. Lots of nice detail incised design. It is 22.5 inches tall. It sells for $290 Shipping within the US is free. Although small, it has a power all its own. It shows considerable age and has a heavy dark patina. You can see some red paint under the dark patina. It is possible it was the top of a paddle or some other item but it does not look like that to me. If it was it had been separated from the paddle for a very long time prior to collection. It is finely carved with incised designs over the entire piece on both sides. If it was ever painted there is none remaining, I suspect it had been painted black only. Since the break is at the top of the head that is what makes me think it was a paint vessel. Dates to the the 1950´s. 12 inches tall. Mounted. It sells for $145 Shipping within the US is free.
