Abelam Notu or Deo Headpiece, Papua New Guinea - 8565

Abelam Notu or Deo Headpiece. Wooden or woven headpieces were made to be worn on the back of a dancer’s head during yam ceremony events. This ancient piece is made of balsa wood, which is favored because it is light. It is painted with bright colors, many of which are made from local seeds collected during the rainy season. In spite of its age it retains a lot of paint with different designs on front and back. It retains an old collection tag and was collected by Ron Perry on 16 May 1975 in Pugako Village in the Wosera. It is early to mid-20th and is 29 inches tall and 15 inches wide
