Abelam Yam Fan, Wosera, New Guinea - #6625

Abelam Yam Fan - Yam Fan from the Wosera area of Papua New Guinea. Fans such as this are made to be used with balsa yam faces.  The balsa heads are attached to the open part of the fan and are then used to decorate, consecrate, and celebrate the ancestors at the yam harvest festival.  This old yam fan shows its age but is still in excellent shape and has lots of bright, native-made paint still on both sides. It was collected in the 1970’s. Measures10 inches wide by 9 inches high.
