Bridal Veil, Iatmul People, Sepik River New Guinea - #9176

Bridal Veil, Iatmul People, Sepik River New Guinea. These are worn during wedding ceremonies. It is made of woven bush twine, darkened with age. There is a crocodile head woven at the bottom. I would guess this bride was from the crocodile clan. It is roughly 32 inches long. Circa 1960’s.

It was exhibited at Augustana College, Sioux Falls, SD at the Eide/Dalrymple Gallery exhibit: The Bird and the Flute – Mythic Images of New Guinea from the Collection of Joe Maierhauser in April 2013.
