Chambri Lakes Fireplace Fragment with Ancestor Face. One of the only places in the Sepik region that has clay good enough for pottery is in the Chambri Lakes. The villages of the Chambri are renowned for their pottery which is widely traded up and down the Sepik. You see their large wok-shaped fireplaces in most villages along the river. This fragment is from a very old fireplace, it is heavily encrusted with a dark patina from years of use. Custom mounted. It is 7.5 inches high and 4.75 inches wide.
