Dani Bride Price Belt, West Papua – FP362

Dani Bride Price Belt, West Papua. The Dani are most famous for the classic film made about them called Dead Birds. They were a very warlike tribe in the highlands of Papua. This old belt is made of the smooth and even bush twine the Dani are so good at making. Woven into the twine is brown and yellow orchid bark, decorated with shells. It dates to the 1960’s or earlier and was collected by well-know jeweler Frank Pantania whose work is in the Smithsonian collection.
