Old Wooden Yam Ceremony Mask, Abelam People, New Guinea - #9178

Old Wooden Yam Ceremony Mask, Abelam People, New Guinea. Masks like this are used the same way the more common woven Abelam masks are used, to decorate the giant yams grown by the men. You can see from the back this mask has considerable age to it, circa mid to late 1960’s. It has nice paint remaining, all clay or vegetable-base paint. It is 19 inches tall.
