Shell Ring Ceremonial Money, Papua New Guinea – B14-1

Shell Ring Ceremonial Money, Papua New Guinea. Shell rings over varying sizes are made from giant clam shells. The large ones are known as Yua, which means “money”. The artists use bamboo and sand to cut the rings from the shell then carve and smooth them. This very old ring is beautifully smooth from years of use. There is some remaining traditional red color on it. They are used in ceremonial exchanges - for instance, as part of a bride price.

This one is roughly 4 inches in diameter and comes with a custom stand.
