Yam Shovel Top, Wosera area, Abelam people, Papua New Guinea - #8462

Yam Shovel Top, Wosera area, Abelam people, Papua New Guinea. This is the top of a shovel which is used to dig the men’s large ceremonial yams. The shovels are obviously thought of very highly as when one breaks you often see the top saved with the end shaped so it can be stuck in the ground. They are generally made of black palm wood and have an ancestor face and other clan decoration carved on them. Superb and very old artifact with a dark patina and showing considerable age wear. Circa 1940’s.  40.75 inches tall, custom mounted.
