A Wooden Yam Ceremony Mask, Abelam People, New Guinea. These little masks are used during the annual yam ceremony. As is very common with these, it is made of balsa wood. It has a nice age patina from use in several yam cycles. Painted with clay-based locally made paint. It is 13 inches tall.
