Maira figure from the Maprik area, Abelam people, Papua New Guinea. Many of the artifacts from the Wosera and Maprik areas have to do with the yam cycle and ceremonies involved with it, a tradition of birth and rebirth.

Figures such as this one are also part of the birth and rebirth cycle and represent ancestral spirits that are involved in all aspects of village life, all tied to the yam cycle.

This colorful figure is classic in design and painting and was definitely made to be used and was used. The paints are all locally made from clays and vegetable sources. It is 34.5 inches tall and custom mounted.
