Abelam Notu Headdress, Papua New Guinea. These headdresses are used in the Abelam area and are known by several names, Notu, Deo, and Wakan. They are worn on the back of an initiated man’s head during yam ceremony events. Smaller versions are used with woven yam masks when presenting the huge ritual yams at the yam ceremony. This deo is made of wood and painted with locally made paints. It is 27.25 inches tall and 13.75 inches wide, custom mounted.
