Art & Artifacts > Mosquito Smoke Pot, Yuat River, New Guinea - 7010

This pot comes from Dimeri village, one of the few areas along the Sepik river that has decent quality pottery clay. These little pots are hung in the house with smoldering wood and leaves that serve to keep the squadrons of mosquitos away. Although in my experience, nothing actually keeps them away! Blackened from much use. This low fired pot itself is 5.75 inches tall with a diameter of 4.5 inches. It was collected in Dimeri in November of 1976 but is clearly much older.
