Although hooks are fairly commonly seen in New Guinea art ones that have seen a lot of use are far less common than one might think, especially since the do still use them. This guy has a very dark patina and you can see the polish on the hooks right where they should be. The eyes are some type of shell, also heavily patinaed. He is 8.5 inches tall and was collected in December of 1976. It is circa early 1960’s or before.
I recently obtained a group of artifacts from legendary New Guinea collector Ron Perry. He collected them in situ in the fall of 1976. They all came from an unopened crate from that time, so none have been seen or sold before.
