Art & Artifacts > Wooden Trophy Head, Sepik River, New Guinea - 10985

By the 1950’s or so wooden heads took the place of actual human heads because by that time headhunting had been banned by the Australians who controlled New Guinea. (Although it certainly did continue in remote areas.) For ceremonial purposes wooden heads were carved. This very expressive and nicely carved head was collected in the Indigai village in December of 1976 and dates to the 1960’s. It is 10.5 inches tall. Trimmed with grass and bush twine, painted black with some nice age patina.

I recently obtained a group of artifacts from legendary New Guinea collector Ron Perry. He collected them in situ in the fall of 1976. They all came from an unopened crate from that time, so none have been seen or sold before.
