Jewelry & Personal Adornment > Dani Bailer Shell Pectoral, Papua, #FP532

Dani Bailer Shell Pectoral, Papua. This very old bailer shell pectoral comes from the Dani people of the highlands of Papua. They were the subject of a very famous ethographic file called Dead Birds. It dates to the mid-20th century or earlier. The old shell is attached to a tightly woven bush twine band, which is covered with shells. The shell itself is roughly 8 by 4 inches. I t was collected by well-know jewelry-maker Frank Patania. The woven band is 31 inches long.
