Superb Lime Stick, Maprik area, Abelam People, New Guinea. Lime sticks are used in the consumption of betel nut. To get the desired effect one needs the fruit of the betel nut palm, pepper plant pods and lime. Lime is kept in a container, usually a gourd and the stick used as a dipper. The beautiful piece is made of a cassowary bone stick with a hornbill head carved at the top. The woven bush twine decoration is colorfully painted and has an ancestor face on it. It is 15 inches tall and comes with a custom base.
